Song Premiere: Steve Vai, “John the Revelator”
Guitar God inspired gospel-blues “Voodoo classic, a bit ‘hot sauce to add’
Veteran guitar virtuoso Steve Vai will release his 16th solo album, The Story of Light, August 14. The album is the first since 2005, Vai’s Real Illusions: Reflections, and it is said, the album continues the “conceptual story arc,” which led “the cosmic journey of a man gone mad with grief, weaving the tragedy, revelation, enlightenment and redemption. ”
The history of Light will also be appearances by Aimee Mann, with Vai duet on a song he co-wrote, and The Voice finalist Beverly McClellan, who seems to play the hymn Vais searing gospel call and response “John the Revelator.” The Vai says that version was inspired by the 1930 survey of Blind Willie Johnson.
“I heard the version of Blind Willie Johnson, and oozing with mojo,” the guitarist of Rolling Stone. “I was overwhelmed with remorse, voodoo hot sauce to add it.”
Vai playing song samples the 1930 recording. Listen to the song here, and check out upcoming tour dates below the guitarist.
